When Bad News Feels Overwhelming
No news is good news because it seems like all of it is bad. Don't you feel like that these days? When we turn on the TV or look at Facebook, read Twitter, watch YouTube or TikTok it is easy to get completely inundated by bad news. What new disease is spreading? What country are we about to go to war with? What food item is doubling in price? Will we have electricity tomorrow? And the list continues. It makes you want to turn everything off and just not be part of the world.
Called to Stand Apart in a Fearful World
But we're different. Part of our job in this world is to show others how to face hard times with grace and hope. We know that no matter how bad things get we do not face these times alone. When people see that we can overcome adversity with God's help they will want to know what we have. What we have is a gracious, loving Savior who stands with us. He is a healer, a way maker, a constant friend in times of sorrow.
“No news is good news, but in Christ we can have hope regardless of what is happening in the world."
Even so, standing strong in these days takes intention. We can’t drift through life and expect to stay encouraged. We must choose to set our minds on Christ every day, reminding ourselves of His promises, His faithfulness, and His presence. When we fill our hearts with God’s truth instead of the world’s constant noise, we find the peace we were longing for. That peace is what others will notice when everything around them feels unstable.
Hard Days, Strong Faith: Remembering What Jesus Told Us
We don't know when the Lord will return but we are told that we can see and understand the signs of it and know that it is near. As this great day approaches things won't be easy for Christians. Matthew 24:9 says, “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake."
Hard times do not mean God has abandoned His people. In fact, Scripture reminds us over and over that God strengthens us in the very moments when the world seems the darkest. Our faith will be tested, but testing has always produced spiritual endurance. Christians throughout history have faced persecution, hardship, and loss, yet their steady faith pointed others to Christ. We must remember that our suffering is never wasted. God uses it to refine us and to display His strength through our weakness.
Hope That Speaks: A Faith Others Can See
In 1 Peter 3:15 Peter says,
"But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear."
This will be so important during trying times. We have a wonderful hope. We need to remember that. If we are as fearful as those in the world then we have nothing to offer. Our faith still speaks hope for a weary world.
No News Is Good News—But Our Nation Needs Healing
In Ezekiel 33, God tells Ezekiel he has been made a Watchman. It is his duty to tell those around him of the coming judgement of Israel. Has God asked us to be a Watchman? To warn those we love of what can happen if there is no repentance? We see around us a world that seems to be crumbling right before our eyes.
Being a watchman today means more than simply recognizing danger, it means responding to it with prayerful action. We cannot warn others if our own hearts are distracted or asleep. God calls us to pay attention, to stay rooted in His Word, and to intercede for those who are drifting further into spiritual darkness. When we speak truth with compassion, some will listen. Even if only one heart turns toward Christ, the effort is worth it. God has placed each of us exactly where we are for a reason.
In 2 Chronicles 7:14, we are told,
"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."
Yes, no news is good news, but today we are surrounded by news - most of it not good. Surely our land needs healing and our sins need forgiving!
But even in a world overflowing with trouble, God has not left His people without a path forward. He has shown us exactly what to do: humble ourselves, pray, and seek His face with sincerity. When we do this, we live as a quiet resistance to the fear and chaos around us. We become living reminders that God still hears, still forgives, and still heals.
The darker the days become, the brighter the hope of Christ should shine in us. Let the world chase the latest headlines. Our confidence rests in the unchanging promises of God. And with hearts anchored in Him, we can face whatever comes with courage, steadfast faith, and the peace only Christ can give. He is an anchor for the soul.
